Fundamental Ingredients of Australian Rainfall Extremes

چکیده
Abstract Satellite observations of Australian rainfall are used with reanalysis fields to identify the fundamental ingredients that distinguish extreme rain days from non‐extreme days. We analyze regions tropics mid‐latitudes, seeking address whether very different large‐scale circulations have common factors required for rainfall, and if so, what synoptic conditions lead development extremes. In all regions, occur in locally strong ascent, high moisture, an atmosphere closer saturation throughout depth free troposphere than on weaker intensity days, although processes leading these local vary regionally. The concentration moisture over several preceding is important extreme. show values precipitable water mid‐level ascent can indicate a day will be analysis uses 20 years satellite‐derived estimates covering period 1998–2017, averaged daily 100 × km 2 areas centered cities Darwin (tropical), Brisbane (subtropical), Melbourne (mid‐latitude). mean rainfalls ranked by intensity, top each region selected as taken compared against those median low region.

Bayesian hierarchical modelling of rainfall extremes
Understanding weather and climate extremes is important for assessing, and adapting to, the potential impacts of climate change. The design of hydraulic structures such as dams, drainage and sewers, for instance, relies in part on accurate information regarding patterns of extreme rainfall occurring at various locations and at different durations. Deriving this kind of information is challengin...
متن کاملMining Extremes: Severe Rainfall and Climate Change
Theoretical developments for the analysis and modeling of extreme value data have tended to focus on limiting cases and assumptions of independence. However, massive datasets from models and sensors, space-time dimensionality, complex dependence structures, long-memory, long-range and low frequency processes all motivate the need for sophisticated methods for correlated and finite data that fol...
متن کاملchanges in rainfall extremes in ontario
there is a general consensus that climate change has impact on the intensity and frequency of rainfall events. however, very little research is available about the changes in short term rainfall extremes. the focus of this paper has been on the change in annual and monthly rainfall extremes in ontario. the results indicate a greater variability (increase and decrease) among stations for shorter...
